Abstract/Contents:"Homeowners and turf managers in the US rely on fewer than 20 plant species for the majority of their grassing needs, most of which originate from the same general region of Eurasia. America has an abundance of native bentgrass species, but none have been commercially exploited for turf use. Idaho bentgrass (Agrostis idahoensis Nash) is a native perennial bunchgrass (lacking lateral runners) found throughout the mountains of NM, AZ, UT, ID, CA, and north to Fairbanks, AK. Our breeding program instilled genetic improvements in A. idahoensis, including darker green leaf color, narrower blades, improved disease resistance and seedling vigor, greater shoot density, and enhanced turf quality. The first cultivar, 'GolfStar,' was released and patented in 1999. GolfStar has shown remarkable performance in the transition zone, at mowing heights form 1.6 to 5 cm, often topping the quality of the better perennial ryegrass and tall fescues."
