Abstract/Contents:"Many natural organic fertilizers and pesticides contain a high proportion of non-organic or inert matter, often of very fine particle sizes. The impact of the non-organic and/or inert fraction of two natural organic fertilizers and two pesticides on saturated hydraulic conductivity (SHC) of lab sand/peat soil columns was determined. Samples were wet ashed to produce the non-organic component which ranged from 49 to 90 %. The SHC after 10 applications was reduced by 13 to 32 %. After 100 applications, SHC was 14 to 64 % slower, with the natural organic fertilizers having the greatest effect on reducing the SHC of a sand/peat root zone typically used on golf greens. These results suggest that more information is needed on the long term impact of natural fertilizers and pesticides on water flow in high sand based systems like putting greens and athletic fields."
