| Abstract/Contents: | "Detailed studies of bentgrass cultivars are rarely conducted under realistic conditions. We compared the rooting and turf quality of established cultivars, Penncross and Pennlinks, to that of recently released cultivars, Crenshaw and Penn A-1, over a two-year period on a 1,100 m² chipping green at a four course golf complex in coastal South Carolina. Turf quality of the new heat-tolerant bentgrasses, A-1 and Crenshaw, was far superior in the summer to the older cultivars, Pennlinks and Penncross. The high shoot density of A-1 and Crenshaw was one factor that contributed to high turf quality ratings. Surprisingly, greater heat tolerance did not arise from deeper rooting, as the old cultivars were rooted 1.25 cm deeper than the new bentgrasses. Greenspeed did not differ among the cultivars even when turf quality and shoot density differences were substantial." |
