Abstract/Contents:"Sand shape can influence putting green rootzone performance, Rounded sands are unstable. Angular sands are too firm. Sand shape evaluation is a subjective, visual assessment. Cone penetrometry may be a better method in determining shape. It is used by engineers to measure soil strength and can be related to grain shape. Our study determined if cone penetrometry could distinguish between sands of different shapes. Round, sub-round, sub-angular and angular were compacted with USGA methods. A cone penetrometer (0.5 sq.cm. base area) with a 0 to 15 kg/sq.cm. strength spring was pushed into the sand to measure penetration resistance. Penetration resistance was well-correlated to sand size, regardless of shape. The relationship for shape and resistance was good at the 0.25mm size and 50:50 mix of 0.25mm:0.50mm sand sizes, but not for the 0.5mm size or 40:40:20 mix of 0.25mm:0.50mm:0.15mm sizes."
