Abstract/Contents:"Field and laboratory studies investigated the effect of endophyte-infected fine fescues on hairy chinch bugs (Blissus leucopterus hirtus Montandon). Significant differences in damage were found between the endophyte-infected (E+) and endophyte-free (E-) field plots of two breeding populations of strong creeping red fescue (F. rubra L. rubra) and two out of three populations of Chewings fescue (Festuca rubra L. subsp. commutata Gaud.). Petri-dish preference tests using first-instar chinch bugs compared five endophyte/fescue combinations with their E-counterparts. A significantly higher percentage of nymphs was found on the E-tillers for four of the five comparisons. No-choice 'cup trials with a strong creeping red fescue found significant differences in first-instar survival between E+ and E- tillers, and a small difference between the two endophyte sources tested. Because of the higher concentration of mycelium in the sheath, the location of nymphs was evaluated. At day 2, significantly more nymphs were found on E- sheaths than on E+ sheaths, while no difference was found on the blade. Cup trials with Chewings fescues found similar results; nymphs on E- tillers had significantly better survival than on E+ tillers, and at day 3, significantly more nymphs were found on E- sheaths than on E+ sheaths with no difference in the number of nymphs on the blade. These studies demonstrate endophyte-enhanced chinch bug resistance for the first time in strong creeping red fescue and suggest variability in insect response to different endophte/plant associations."
