Abstract/Contents:"Low temperature is a major abiotic stress restricting annual bluegrass (Poa annua L.) persistence on golf greens in northern climates. The objectives of our research were 1) to determine the influence of different winter protective covers on golf green soil temperature under two northern climate conditions and to assess their effectiveness on plant quality and 2) to assess cold tolerance and to explore the potential relationship with soluble sugars and fructans accumulations amongst annual bluegrass ecotypes. A 3-yr field study on winter protections indicated that local winter conditions, particularly snow cover, and winter protective cover characteristics are two major factors influencing golf green soil temperatures and turfgrass survival during the overwintering period. Cold tolerance experiments revealed variability in both low temperature tolerance and cold-induced accumulation of soluble sugars among annual bluegrass ecotypes. Variations in soluble sugar and fructan concentrations were not related to observed differences in cold tolerance amongst ecotypes."
