Abstract/Contents:"Aluminum (Al) toxicity is a serious growth-limiting factor in acid soils for turfgrasses. Bermudagrasses are popular warm-season turfgrasses growing in many acid soil regions in the world. Seeded bermudagrasses have become popular in turf industry. Four seeded bermudagrass varieties, Jackpot, Southern Star, Sundevil II, and Mirage were studied for Al tolerance at the seedling stage with comparison of root morphological changes. The study was conducted under greenhouse condition with sand culture treated with 320 uM and 640 uM of Al concentrations. Variations in root growth and morphological damages of roots and shoots were found. The results explain a part of mechanisms of Al toxicity to seeded bermudagrasses, particularly the Al damages to the root systems and indicate the potential of improvement of bermudagrass for aluminum tolerance."
