| Abstract/Contents: | "In August 1998 an apparatus to measure turfgrass sod strength was built at the Hancock Turfgrass Research Center on the campus of Michigan State University. This apparatus uses a hydraulic pulling mechanism to stretch a cut piece of sod. The breaking point of the sod is quantitatively measured using a digital load cell. Sod strength measurements were conducted to determine differences in establishment rates for Kentucky bluegrass treated with and without plant growth regulators and wetting agents. In addition, sod strength measurements will be collected from different sods consisting of different turf species, levels of maturity, thickness of cut, and soil types. The aim of this study is to establish pooled levels of turfgrass tearing strength (peak load cell measurements) values for different sods. These values will be applied to future establishment studies." |
