| Abstract/Contents: | "An experiment was conducted over 2 years to investigate the effects of mowing height and plant growth regulator (PGR) use on creeping bentgrass root growth. 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass was maintained at 32, 40, or 48 mm throughout the experiment. PGR treatments were paclobutrazol (PB) applied at 0.14, 0.28, or 0.56 kg a.i./ha and trinexapac-ethyl (TE) applied at 0.05 kg a.i./ha. Mowing treatments were initiated 16 Mar. 1997. PGR treatments were first applied one month later and again at four-week intervals for the duration of the experiment. Monthly sampled roots were washed free of soil, oven-dried, and combusted to determine their weight. Continuous mowing at 32 mm was the most deleterious of any treatment to root growth. Root growth was not enhanced by any PGR treatment but only PB applied at 0.56 kg a.i./ha inhibited root growth, suggesting that normal PGR use will not exacerbate seasonal effects on bentgrass root growth." |
