Abstract/Contents: | "Identification of plant water status using an indirect, non-destructive method is important if turfgrass managers are to effectively use their water resources while maintaining optimal growing conditions. This experiment determined the effectiveness of characterizing turfgrass water status in a real-time, non-destructive manner. Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds. cv. 'Penncross') and Poa annua L. were grown in mini-lysimeters containing a sandy loam or sand/peat. A near infrared spectrophotometer was used to measure spectral radiance from the turf canopy between 400 and 2500 nm during a dry-down period. Evapotranspiration (ET) and volumetric soil moisture content measurements were recorded with spectral radiance readings. Coefficients of determination for prediction of soil volumetric moisture content ranged from 0.74 |
