Abstract/Contents:"Little information is available about the microbial diversity present in the sand-based rootzone mixes used in putting greens. Therefore, the objectives of this study were: 1) to determine the culturable microbial populations present in a peat-amended and in a compost-soil amended mix; 2) to assess the culturable bacterial diversity in each mix; and 3) to determine the shifts in densities and diversity in each mix after incorporation into two putting green profiles (California and USGA) and over time. Bacterial and fungal population densities were monitored over a 27 month period post greens construction via dilution plating. Bacterial strains isolated from putting green samples were identified via gas chromatography-fatty acid methyl ester analysis to assess species diversity. To date, 4290 isolates have been purified and identified. The shifts in microbial population densities and bacterial diveristy over time will be discussed."
