Abstract/Contents:"Cool-season turfgrasses on putting greens in NC experience maximum root growth in spring and fall. During stressful summer periods, root growth can dramatically decrease. This experiment addressed the question of whether 'Penncross' creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass can withstand stressful daytime root-zone temperatures if they are subjected to cooler nighttime root-zone temperature. Both species were grown in solution culture with all daytime solutions maintained at 34C and all nighttime solutions at either 22, 26, 30, or 34C. Fresh root biomass decreased linearly with increasing nighttime temperatures for both species. 'Penncross' produced more root biomass than annual bluegrass at all temperatures. The greatest increase in root lenght for either species was observed at the 26C temperature. Both species experienced a decrease in root length at the 34C temperature."
