Abstract/Contents:"Cultivar selection and nitrogen fertility significantly influence the performance of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris Huds.). This 19 month study was conducted to determine the effects of three nitrogen fertility levels on the root growth and shoot quality of three creeping bentgrass cultivars. The study was conducted in the University of Georgia rhizotron, Athens, GA. Total root density (TRD), deep root density (DRD), shoot quality and density, and root:shoot ratio were determined for 'Crenshaw', 'Penncross', and 'L93' creeping bentgrass maintained at 195.3, 390.6, and 586.0 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. Over the duration of the study, mean TRD, DRD and shoot quality of Crenshaw was greater than L93 and Penncross at 195.3 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. Mean TRD, DRD, and shoot quality and density of both Crenshaw and L93 were greater than Penncross at 390.6 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. Mean DRD, shoot quality and density of both Crenshaw and L93 were greater than Penncross at 586.0 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. Crenshaw exhibited maximum TRD, DRD and shoot quality and density at 390.6 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹, whereas L93 exhibited maximum TRD and DRD at 390.6 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ and maximum shoot quality and denstiy at 586.0 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹. Overall, the mean TRD for the duration of the study at 195.3 kg N ha⁻d]1 yr⁻¹ was greater than at 586.0 kg N ha⁻¹ yr⁻¹ for all cultivars."
