Abstract/Contents:"Amended sand is routinely used for the construction of root zones for golf putting greens. Putting green root zone mixtures were constructed in two locations to examine the effect of sand size distribution, amendment material and microenvironmental conditions on the performance of creeping bentgrass. Six sand size distributions, conforming to and finer than USGA recommendations for particle size distribution, were amended with sphagnum moss peat at 9:1 volume ratio. A silt loam, five organic, and six inorganic materials were used to amend, at varying ratios, a sand meeting USGA recommendations for particle size distribution. Root zone treatments were designed to produce a range of physical, chemical and biological properties. Data on turf peformance as affected by sand size distribution, amendment source and rate, and microenvironmental conditions will be discussed."
