Abstract/Contents:"Variation between laboratories in saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) measurements limits utility of the data. Studies determined the effect of antecedent water content of the sample and test water temperature on entrapped air and, subsequently, Ksat of a USGA sized sand. Procedures to control sample water content before saturation and water temperature were added to the USGA test protocol. Water content was controlled by draining samples to a water tension of 40-cm and drying to 30 and 70 C. Water temperatures were controlled at 6, 14, 18, 22, 26, 30, and 38 C and room temperature was 22 C. Antecedent water contents less than 0.03 mĀ³ mā»Ā³ decreased entrapped air during saturation and increased Ksat. Water temperature at 6 C increased Ksat by decreasing entrapped air content during the test. Greater solubility of air in water at 6 C is thought to be the reason for decreased entrapped air."
