| Abstract/Contents: | "Variation between laboratories in saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) measurements limits utility of the data. Studies determined the effect of antecedent water content of the sample and saturation method on entrapped air and subsequently Ksat. Sand conforming to USGA particle size mixed with peat was used for physical property testing. Procedures to control sample water content before saturation and saturation method were added to the USGA test protocol. Water content was controlled by draining samples to a tension of 40-cm and drying to 30 and 70 C. Samples were saturated at atmospheric pressure or 0.1 MPa vacuum. Antecedent water content less than 0.025 m³ m⁻³ decreased entrapped air during saturation and increased Ksat. Saturation under vacuum decreased entrapped air and, except at less than 0.01 m³ m⁻³ antecedent water content, increased Ksat." |
