Abstract/Contents: | "This study was established on a golf course green maintained at the Penn State Valentine Turfgrass Research Center at University Park to assess the performance of a pyrethroid, a fungal formulation, and an industry standard to control primarily third instar BCW larve. Treatment plots were 6 x 10 ft, arranged in a RCB design and replicated four times. Granular formulations were applied with a hand held shaker with top dressing sand used to provide even distribution of product. Liquid formulations were applied by using a CO₂ sprayer with 4 8002VS TeeJet nozzles mounted on a 6 ft boom operating at 28 psi, and applied in 454 ml of water/60 ft or delivering 2.0 gal/1000 ft ². Treatments were applied on 22 Jul following artificial infestation of the research area with second and third instar BCW larvae on 21 Jul. An average of 9.4 larvae/yd was recorded on 22 Jul. The entire experimental area was covered with bird netting from 21 Jul through 28 Jul. At treatment time (22 Jul), the following soil and environmental conditions existed: air temperature, 74°F; soil temperature at 1 inch depth, 68°F; soil temperature at 2 inch depth, 68°F; RH, 78%; amount of thatch, 0.125 inch; soil textural class, sandy loam; soil particle size analysis: 63.2% sand, 27.2% silt, 9.6% clay; percent water content (percent by wt), 8.8%; organic matter, 4.5%; water pH, 7.0; soil pH, 6.6; time of application, early morning; thatch wet and soil wet; and clear skies. The experimental area was syringed on an as needed basis through 5 Aug. Efficacy data was recorded on 24 Jul, 28 Jul, and 5 Aug by counting the number of BCW larvae flushed to the surface within a 1.0 yd wood frame sampling area using a soap irritant drench of 30 ml Lemon Joy dishwashing detergent in 2 gal of water. Four treatments provided significant control on sampling dates 24 Jul and 28 Jul while all treatments provided significant control on sampling date 5 Aug. Formulations of DeltaGard and Dursban Pro provided excellent control while Naturalis-T, disregarding rates, provided no significant control 3 DAT. No phytotoxicity was noted." |
