| Abstract/Contents: | "Genetic improvements in creeping and velvet bentgrasses potentially enhance the competitive ability against annual bluegrass invasion. A field study was initiated in 1998 to evaluate the time of year for bentgrass establishment that may enhance the competitive ability of bentgrass against annual bluegrass. Five bentgrass cultivars were seeded in May, June, August, September and October 1998 into a sandy loam containing a high annual bluegrass seed bank population. Line-intersect counts were used to assess species population dynamics. The June seeding date resulted in less annual bluegrass invasion than seeding dates in May, August, September, and October. This would be explained by the fact that annual bluegrass is a winter annual, and peak seed germination periods would be late-summer to early-fall. Annual bluegrass invasion differed with bentgrass cultivar depending on seeding date." |
