| Abstract/Contents: | "Since 1984, the Turfgrass Information Center (TIC) has continued to develop and refine an indexing vocabulary for turf science and culture, as a part of the ongoing efforts to build the Turfgrass Information File (TGIF), a now- World Wide Web accessible guide to the turfgrass literature. This nomenclature database, The Turfgrass Thesaurus, currently includes over 15,000 terms, and provides a framework for consistently indexing item content, which can transcend geographic, taxonomic, popular/technical, and time variations and changes in turf terminology. An extensive and ever-expanding syndetic structure incorporates a range of terms relevant to turfgrass concerns, such as species, cultivars, experimental designations, active ingredients, cultural practices, types of equipment, concepts, research variables, facilities, etc. In an online searching environment, the Thesaurus can provide benefits such as automated synonym checking and hierarchical retrieval structures." |
