| Abstract/Contents: | "Soil aeration plays a major role in the growth and development of healthy root systems in highly maintained turfgrass such as creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustris) golf greens. When soil temperatures increase, root and microbial respiration stimulate CO₂ levels. Soil ODR (Oxygen Diffusion Rate) measures the rate of CO₂ exchange between the soil and atmosphere. When soils become saturated or compacted, the soil ODR decreases allowing for a build up of soil CO₂. Carbon dioxide is known to be toxic to root growth, but a threshold level is not known for creeping bentgrass root injury. Discussions will examine differing gas concentrations of O₂ and CO₂ maintained in the root zone of a sand-based USGA soil. Root growth and overall plant heatlh will be measured. Results will include creeping bentgrass root thresholds to high CO₂ concentrations as well as limited O₂ availability." |
