Abstract/Contents:"Interaction of atmospheric and soil gases play a major role in the overall quality of intensively managed turfgrass areas. Gases make up approximately 25% of a typical soil volume. Composition of soil air is similar to the composition of the atmosphere with the exception of O₂ and CO₂. Toxic gases such as CO₂, CH₄, and H₂S may potentially be purged or removed from the soil by inducing sub-surface air movement. This paper will summarize a current experiment investigating effects of timing, duration, and type of induced sub-surface air movement on a creeping bentgrass golf green in a heat-stress environment. Results discussed will include effects of sub-surface air movement on soil gas concentrations, soil volumetric water content, soil temperature, surface temperature, and bentgrass root growth."
