Abstract/Contents:"Various pesticides were applied when BTA adults were in the turf to assess the control of these adults and resultant larval populations. The experiment was located at the Ohio State University, OTF Turfgrass Research and Education Center, Columbus, OH. Treatments were applied 6 May to plots 5 ft x 10 ft, with 4 ft alleyways between replicates, in a RCB replicated four times. Liquid applications were made using a 3-ft long, 3-nozzle boom, CO₂ pressurized sprayer with TeeJet 8004 nozzles at 15 psi calibrated to deliver 2.0 gal/1000 ft². No immediate post-treatment irrigation was applied. The ranges were irrigated daily with approximately 0.25 inch of water starting the morning of 8 May. Field conditions at time of application were as follows: turf-90% creeping bentgrass (Penncross), 10% annual bluegrass; mowed at 3/8 inches; thatch, moist, loose, 0.25 to 0.5 inch; soil-moist, 72°F @ 1 inch, 68°F @ 3L inch; weather-partly cloudy; air temperature 78°F; 6 to 7 mph winf from SE. To evaluate control of BTA adults, on 20 May (14 DAT), a 1.0 yd² area of each plot (east end) was drenched with a soap solution (20 ml Joy Ultra in 2.0 gal water) and all insects were collected in 30 ml vials of KAAD preservative. To evaluate BTA larval populations, five 4.25-inch cup cutter cores were removed from the west half of each plot and evaluated for BTA larvae on 25 Jun (48 DAT). BAT adult counts at 14 DAT and 48 DAT larval numbers using combined five sample counts were analyzed by ANOVA and means were separated using LSD (P = 0.1). At 14 DAT, the BTA adult population was deemed low (9.5/yd² in checks) and adult control was inconsistent in the Conserve and Merit treatments. The high Conserve, Dursban Pro and Talstar treatments gave good knockdown of the BTA adults. At 48 DAT, the BTA larval population was deemed moderate (59.9/ft² in checks). The high rate of Conserve (0.8 lb/acre), its the double application, Dursban Pro and Talstar provided very good control. Only the Merit-treated plots had 100% control. No phytotxicity was noted from any of the treatments."
