Abstract/Contents:"The goal of the test was to determine how fast various insecticides can control larger cutworms. The experiment was located at the Ohio State University, OTF Turfgrass Research and Educational Center, Columbus, OH. On 18 Aug, plots were marked that were 5 ft x 6 ft, with 2 ft alleyways between rows, arranged in a RCB replicated four times. The experimental area had been moderately infested with sod webworms (SWW), black cutworms (BCW) and black turfgrass ataenius (BTA) in 1996 and 1997 which caused scattered visible damage. To evaluate rapidity-of-kill, three 8-inch diam stainless steel cylinders were driven into the west end of each plot so as to leave four ft vacant on the east end. Each cylinder was then infested with six 0.75-1.0-inch long, laboratory reared, BCW larvae and covered with nylon screen to prohibit bird predation. On 19 Aug, the cylinder covers were removed and liquid applications were applied with a 3-ft long, 3-nozzle boom, CO₂ pressurized sprayer with TeeJet 8004 nozzles at 15 psi calibrated to deliver 1.0 gal/1000 ft². No immediate post-treatment irrigation was applied though ranges were irrigated daily with approximately 0.25 inch of water starting the morning of 20 Aug. Field conditions at the time of 19-Aug applications were as follows: turf was 95% creeping bentgrass (Penncross), 05% annual bluegrass; mowed at 3/8 inches; thatch, moist, loose, 0.25 inch or less; area had been core aerified on 15 Aug and top dressed with sand peat mix in the morning of 18 Aug; soil was moist, 79°F @ 1 inch, 75°F @ 3 inch; weather was clear; air temperature 83°F; 2 to 5 mph wind from E. To evaluate rapidity-of-kill one cylinder from each plot was drenched with approximately 0.5 gal of a soap solution (20 ml Joy Ultra in 2.0 gal water) on 1, 3 and 7 DAT. On 27 Aug, 1.0 yd² area of each plot was soap-drenched and all insects were collected in 30 ml vials of KAAD preservative. The BCW, SWW and BTA numbers were recorded in the laboratory from each vial. Insect totals in ech cylinder or yd in 1 yd² plot were analyzed by ANOVA and means separated using LSD (p = 0.1). All products except for CGA-293, 343 gave excellent control of the larger BCW larvae in the cylinders. ICIA 0321 and Dursban-Pro appeared to take 3 days to achieve maximum control. All products provided excellent control at 7 DAT of the resident populations of SWW, BCW and BTA adults though the numbers of these pests were considered low. No phytotoxicity was noted in any of the plots."
