Abstract/Contents:"Formulations of Tempo and Naturalis-T were tested for the efficacy to control sod webworm (SWW) larvae and black turfgrass ataenius (BTA) adults. The experiment was located at the Ohio State University, OTF Turfgrass Research and Education Center, Columbus, OH. Treatments were applied 2 Oct to plots 5 ft x 6 ft, with 2 ft alleyways between rows, arranged in a RCB replicated four times. The experimental area had been moderately infested with SWW, black cutworms and BTA in 1996 and 1997 which caused scattered visible damage. Liquid applications were made using a 3-ft long, 3-nozzle boom, CO₂ pressurized sprayer with TeeJet 8004 nozzles at 15 psi calibrated to deliver 1.5 gal/1000 ft². No post-treatment irrigation was applied. The ranges were irrigated daily with approximately 0.25 inch of water starting the morning of 3 Oct. Field conditions at the time of 2-Oct applications were as follows: turf-95% creeping bentgrass (Penncross), 05% annual bluegrass; mowed at 3/8 inches; thatch, moist, loose, 0.25 to 0.5 inch; soil-moist, 63°F @ 1 inch, 63°F @ 3 inch; weather-clear; air temperature 55 to 60°F; 0 to 3 mph wind from E; pests-SWW (31.2/yd²) and BTA adults (7.3/yd²) were present as determined by flushing three areas adjacent to the test plot. To evaluate control of the SWW, on 9 Oct (7 DAT), 1.0 yd² area in the middle of each plot was drenched with a soap solution (20 ml Joy Ultra in 2.0 gal water) and all insects were collected in 30 ml vials of KAAD preservative. SWW and BTA numbers were recorded in the laboratory from each vial, and totals per plot were analyzed using ANOVA and means separated using LSD (p = 0.1). On 9 Oct (7 DAT), averages of 27.75 SWW and 4.25 adult BTA were found in the control plots. The SWW numbers are considered high and the BTA numbers are considered very low. All rates of Tempo produced excellent control of SWW and BTA adults at 7DAT. The high rate of Naturalis-T produced significant reductions in the SWW and BTA populations, but this was deemed to be suppression rather than adequate control. No phytotoxicity was noted from any treatment."
