Abstract/Contents:"Mechanical control of black cutworm using high pressure water injection was conducted at the University of Nebraska Agricultural Research and Development Facility near Mead, Nebraska. The turf consisted of creeping bentgrass maintained at green ht of 5/16 inches. Thatch accumulation (finger compressed) in the plot area was 0.5 inch. Field conditions at the study site were: soil type, sand based greens mixture; soil organic matter, 3.5%; soil pH, 6.5; water pH, 7.0. Environmental conditions at the time of application, (19 Jun) were as follows: air temperature, 89°F; soil temperature, 83°F; relative humidity, 29%; wind direction and velocity 246° at 13 mph. Plots were 2 ft x 2 ft (with 8 ft alleyways) and the experimental design was an RCB with four replications. Prior to high pressure water injections, plots were randomly punctured with a pitch fork to facilitate BCW establishment. A foam shaving cream barrier was applied around each plot to prevent BCW escape. Twenty-five late instar BCW were introduced into each plot and allowed to occupy a hole before water injections were applied. Treatments were applied 19 Jun using a John Deere RZI 700 with injection pressure at 5000 psi. Water injections were conducted at a linear speed of 1 mph using 60° / 0.32 inch orifice, dual port nozzles. The 16 nozzles (evenly spaced at 3 inch intervals along the length of the injector manifold) were adjusted to form alternating 45° angles. Treatments consisted of 10, 12 and 16 pulses/sec with either one or two passes (90° from each pass) across plots for each pulse rate. Volume of water applied was 5.4 gal/1000 ft² at 10 pulses/sec, 6.0 gal/1000 ft² at 12 pulses/sec and 7 gal/1000 ft² at 16 pulses/sec. BCW reduction was evaluated approximately one half hour after injections by applying 1.0 oz of Lemon Dawn pr 2 gal of water over each plot. Larvae that moved to the turf surface within 30 min were collected and counted. All treatments, except the one pass at 10 pulse/sec, provided statistically significant reductions in BCW numbers when compared to the untreated control. Although there was no statistically significant differences among the other treatment, higher pulse rates and increased number of passes provided numerically better control. No phytotoxicity or unacceptable turf injury was observed."
