Abstract/Contents:In 1968-71 the effects of climatic conditions on DM accumulation and diam. of stems of timothy were studied. Absolute values of cellulose, lignin and ash in different internodes increased with increase in DM accumulation. The relative values of cellulose and lignin were not strongly influenced by climatic conditions but depended on the stage of stem development. Breaking properties of grass stems were determined mainly by their relative cellulose content, and bending behaviour was determined by the rate of DM accumulation. When cell turgor pressure was low during very dry periods, increased lignin synthesis increased stem strength.
