Abstract/Contents:"The effects of various irrigation regimens on the efficacy of bifenthrin (Talstar GC Flowable) and lambda-cyhalothrin (Scimitar GC) for controlling nymphs and adults of the mole crickets Scapteriscus borellii and S. vicinis were investigated at Carolina Shore Country Club in Brunswick County, N.C. Plots 20 ft x 20 ft were established on a bermudagrass fairway in an area showing relatively uniform damage from the infestation of southern and tawny mole cricket nymphs and adults. A CRD was used and each treatment was replicated four times. All insecticides were applied on 28 Aug using a Turf-Gator mounted boom sprayer delivering 40 gal/acre using ten 8003vs nozzles. The soil and air temperature at the time of application were 84°F and 79°F, respectively. Soil at the test site was classified as mineral soil with a pH of 6.1 and 0.6% humic matter. Soil moisture was 6.5%. Four irrigation regimens, including non-irrigation, pre-irrigation, post-irrigation, and pre-plus-post-irrigation, were tested. Irrigation regimens were established by covering the plots which were not to receive irrigation with plastic tarps and using the golf course irrigation system to apply about 0.25 inch of water to either pre-irrigation or post-irrigation plots, and 0.50 inch of water to pre + post irrigation plots. The insecticides were immediately applied to the pre-irrigation plots after irrigation. A post-irrigation was applied immediately after insecticide application. Plots were evaluated from 3 Sep to 8 Oct (7 DAT to 35 DAT) by making five random damage grid ratings per replicate. Damage was rated on a 0-9 scale based on the occurrence of fresh damage on the nine subgrids of a 1 m² grid frame, where 0 = no damage and 9 = severe damage. The five grid ratings per replicate were averaged. All data were transformed (square root of X + 0.5) prior to ANOVA and Waller-Duncan K-ratio T test. Mole cricket damage ratings indicated that there were no significant difference among all treatments on 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 DAT."
