Abstract/Contents:"In this study thiamethoxam, CGA-393343, was evaluated as a preventive treatment before and after JB egg laying. Naturalis T, a Beauveria bassiana formulation, was evaluated as a curative against first and second instar JB with and without posttreatment irrigation. The study was located on the lawn of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center at Wooster, Ohio. Applications were made 14 May, 21 Jul, and 12 Aug to plots 3 x 5 ft arranged in a RCB replicated three times. Treatments were applied with a CO₂ sprayer and TeeJet XR8010VS nozzles at 30 psi (2.1 kg/cm²) pressure that delivered a 2 gal/1000 ft² spray volume. Treated plots, plots received 4.5 gal water immediately after each treatment was applied. The site conditions were: 100% Kentucky bluegrass, no thatch, and the ground was level. Environmental conditions were for the 14 May treatments were as follows: JB larvae-none present; turf-dry, 2.75 inch ht; soil-moist, 66°F at 1 inch and 65°F at 3 inches; weather-sunny, 82°F, and no wind. Environmental conditions for the 17 Jun treatments were as follows: JB larvae-none present; turf-dry, 2.75 ht; soil-moist, 78°F at 1 inch and 76°F at 3 inches; weather-sunny, 76°F, and 0-5 mph wind. Environmental conditions for the 21 Jul treatments were as follows: JB larvae-first instar present; turf-dry, 3 inch ht; soil-moist, 77°F at 1 inch and 76°F at 3 inches; weather-cloudy, 78°F, and 10-15 mph gusting wind. Environmental conditions for the 12 Aug treatments were as follows: JB larvae-second instars present; turf-dry, 2.75 inch ht; soil-moist, 78°F at 1 inch and 76°F at 3 inches; weather-sunny, 76°F, and 0-5 mph wind. A caging technique was used to ensure JB oviposition into the plots. Three cylinders, 8 inch diam x 6 inch ht, were inserted into the plots. Thirty JB adults measured volumetrically were placed twice in each cylinder on 2 Jul (46% females) and 8 Jul (52% females). Caged adults were fed fresh apple slices coated with brewers yeast every 2 days. Cylinders were removed 14 days after the initial caging. The numbers of live larvae in three 8-inch diam samples, centered of the cage-cylinder in each plot, were counted on 7 Oct. ANOVA was done on plot totals and means were separated by LSD test at p = 0.1. All thimethoxam treatments and the treated check, Merit (imadacloprid) on all dates resulted in excellent and significant control. None of the Naturalis T treatments significantly reduced the JB grubs in the cylinder-cage locations. Posttreatment irrigated Naturalis T applied 12 Aug had significantly more JB grubs than the untreated check. No phytotoxicity was observed."
