Abstract/Contents:"An area of non-irrigated rough at The Country Club of Jackson in Jackson County, MI was used for this test. Plots were 3 ft x 3 ft separated by a 2 ft wide buffer strip. The area in which the test was conducted has had a history of EC grubs for more than 6 years. Most of the roughs on the course were treated with Dylox G during the fall of 1997. The plot area was checked at dusk in mid Jun for adult activity. More than 1000 EC adults were observed. Plots were laid out on 29 Jul and treatments applied. Liquid treatments were applied at 50 psi through a single nozzle hand-held CO₂ sprayer with a 8003 nozzle. Most of the liquid treatments were applied at 175 gpa of finished spray except for one of the Naturalis O treatments which was applied at 10 gpa of finished spray. Granular treatments were applied with a hand held shaker. 0.25 to 0.5 of irrigation was applied with a portable sprinkler on 29 Jul and 6 Aug. The 10 gpa finished spray application of Naturalis O was applied just prior to the start of the irrigation on 29 Jul. Treatments were made between 10:00 AM and 11:30 AM. An early grub count was taken on 6 Aug for four treatments: Dylox, Mach-2F, Mach-2G and the untreated check. The grubs found were all first instar at that time. Grub counts increased in the untreated check plots 6 Aug to the final evaluations on 17 and 22 Sep, indicating that eggs continued to hatch after 6 Aug. All the plots were evaluated on 17 and 22 Sep by digging 2 ft² of each plot and counting the grubs. Care was taken to make sure the early and late evaluations were taken from different areas of the plot. At the time of evaluation, the superintendent stated that he had observed more JB than in any previous year. Many ornamental trees were damaged by adult feeding. Forty-seven grubs were collected from our plot area on 22 Sep for species identification. We found 26 EC and 21 JB grubs. Merit, and both formulations of Novartis 293343 significantly reduced grub populations (>75% control). Mach-2 0.5G reduced grub numbers by 66% compared with the untreated check, but the means were not different at the P = 0.05 level. Grub numbers in the untreated check plots have gradually increased over the last few years (100% from 1996 to 1997 and 50% from 1997 to 1998)."
