Abstract/Contents:"Three pyrethroids - bifenthrin (Talstar 0.67F), cyfluthrin (Tempo 20WP), and deltamethrin (Deltagard SC) - were applied alone or in combination with imidacloprid (Merit) or chlorpyrifos (Dursban Pro) to golf course fairway turf in the spring of 1998 to determine their efficacy against annual bluegrass weevil. This test was conducted at two sites, Fairview Country Club (Greenwich, CT) and Tumble Brook Country Club (West Hartford, CT). At Greenwich, applications were made on 14 Apr (sunny, light breeze, air temp 60°F, soil temp 62°F at 2 inches). Soil pH was 6.6, buffered 6.8, CEC 13.9 Meq/100 g. At West Hartford, applications were made on 20 Apr (high overcast, light westerly breeze < 5 mph, air temp 49°, soil temp 45° at 2 inches). Soil pH was 5.2 and buffered pH 6.1, CEC 15.1 Meq/100 g. Treatment plots were 6 ft x 6 ft, replicated five times, and arranged in a CRB. All applications were made with a watering can using 3 qts water per plot. Plots were watered in with 0.1 to 0.2 in irrigation within 1 h after application. Product efficacy was evaluated on 2 Jun (Greenwich) or 22 Jun (West Hartford) by removing 12 cores, 1.85 in diam, from near the center of each plot. Cores were transported to Amherst, MA, where they were broken apart manually and inspected under 10 X magnification. Insect counts were recorded for 3 cores at a time (4 observations per replication, 20 total observations). While all stages were recorded, only larvae, prepupae, and pupae (labelled as 'larvae' in the table below) were included in statistical analyses (Duncan's MRT, P=0.05), because teneral adults are much more mobile than the immature stages and might have migrated into treatment plots 6 to 8 wks after application. The insect populations in the untreated plots were well below the commonly accepted threshold populations (30-40 larvae/sq. ft.) for this insect, and none of the plots had evidence of insect feeding activity. However, the sampling procedure provided some statistical separations. At the Greenwich site every treatment reduced populations significantly relative to the untreated check. At the West Hartford site, the tank mixes of Deltagard or Talstar with Dursban or Merit all reduced weevil populations significantly relative to the untreated check, but there was no significant difference between these tank mixes and the pyrethroid alone. A tank mix of Dursban with any of the three pyrethroids reduced populations significantly more than Dursban alone. The combinations of any of the pyrethroids + Merit provided excellent control (>85%) of the spring generation at both locations."
