Abstract/Contents:The effect of extracts from E. vagans flowers, leaves, stems and roots on germination of Trifolium pratense and Phleum pratense and on growth of oat coleoptile sections was investigated. Acid extracts of E. vagans flowers inhibited germination of T. pratense and especially of P. pratense seeds and reduced hypocotyl and radicle growth of T. pratense and of coleoptiles and radicles of P. pratense by 90-100%. Acid extracts of leaves had no effect on germination, slightly reduced hypocotyl growth and slightly increased radicle growth, while totally inhibiting growth of coleoptiles and radicles of P. pratense; the effects of acid extract of stems and roots were similar. Phenolic-neutral fractions of flower extracts inhibited radicle growth in P. pratense; the ethyl acetate fraction of leaf extracts inhibited seed germination and subsequent growth of P. pratense. In the oat coleoptile straight-growth test, elongation was inhibited by 90% by the acid fraction of flower extracts. (See also HbA 44, 3869).
