| Abstract/Contents: | "Two-year-old plants grown in the field from seeds from 28 localities in northern and southern Hokkaido were studied. In the early growth stages, the southern group showed greater leaf area expansion/tiller than did the northern group. Heritability estimates for this character were high at this stage and the character showed positive correlations with monthly mean winter temperatures at collection sites. Apparently in northern populations leaf growth was inhibited under low temperatures, resulting in increased cold tolerance." |
