Abstract/Contents:Experiments were conducted on established turfgrass to evaluate preemergent control of smooth crabgrass [ Digitaria ischaemum (Shreb.) Muhl.]. Tests were initiated to show the effects of standard and experimental herbicides, various formulations, time of application, surfactant effects and mechanical spreader applications of siduron. Results were based on percent crabgrass control and degree of injury to turfgrass. Certain rates, formulations and dates of treatment with bensulide, butralin, DCPA, oxadiazon, prosulfalin and siduron provided excellent results. Benefin and the experimental materials HOE-22870, HOE-23408, M-4212 and R-40244 provided less favorable results. Siduron exhibited poor control (less than 70%) when applied in March but excellent control (90-100%) was observed when applied in May. Benefin and butralin caused more turf injury when applied in May while oxadiazon caused more injury when applied in March. All four formulations of bensulide provided similar results. The wettable powder formulation of DCPA tended to cause more injury to fescue turf and better control than the granular formulation. The 5% formulation of oxadiazon did not provide as good crabgrass control as the 2% formulation. Granular formulations of siduron exhibited considerable differences in control whether applied by hand or mechanical spreader. Surfactants showed no control of crabgrass and a tendency for some surfactants, when combined with DCPA, to increase turf injury.
