Abstract/Contents:The study was conducted to 1) evaluate the effect of heat on callus growth and plantlet regeneration of two creeping bentgrass variants and Penncross, and 2) to evaluate schemes in selecting for heat tolerance. The two variants consisted for MSCB 6 and MSCB 8. MSCB 6 was originally a line of Penncross previously selected in tissue culture at 35°C while MSCB 8 was an ecotype that had been growing at the Plant Science Farm, MSU. Both variants have been field-evaluated at extreme high temperature and drought conditions and were found to have outstanding performance. Different light periods and temperature variants were placed on the clusters. Callus growth was evaluated by obtaining fresh weights at 10, 20 and 30 days incubation. Plantlet formation and root growth were determined after 30, 40 and 50 days. Results have shown that MSVB 6 had significantly highest mean values for callus growth at all schemes after 10, 20, and 30 days incubation. MSCB 8 had slightly lower callus weights than Penncross at 25±2°C but showed higher weights than Penncross at high temperature. Callus growth of both variants were higher at 25±2°C (or room temp.) than at 40±3°C throughout the duration of incubation. Other findings include the specific schemes and the effect on callus growth.
