Abstract/Contents:The reclamation of coal-mined land in New Mexico is discussed in relation to soils, climate and natural vegetation, revegetation techniques (including plant spp., sowing methods, transplanting, amendments and irrigation) and a list of details pertinent to the revegetation of this disturbed land. The dry sandy soils support an open grassland with a scattering of shrubs. Principal grasses include Hilaria jamesii, (a) Sporobolus airoides and (b) Oryzopsis hymenoides. Principal shrubs are Atriplex confertifolia and A. nuttallii. At present the most promising spp. to sow on the mine spoils are (a), Atriplex canescens and (b) and to a lesser extent crested wheatgrass, Agropyron trachycaulum, A. sibiricum, Sporobolus cryptandrus and yellow sweet clover.
