Abstract/Contents: | Laboratory studies have shown that seeds of fall panicum ( Panicum dichotomiflorum Michx.) have an intense dormancy, which is difficult to overcome by pretreatment of the dry seeds with an accelerated after-ripening. A more effective pretreatment is a 35 deg.C dark imbibition for a week. In either case, activation of phytochrome by red radiation is required for germination. The red-induced germination is completely reversible by far-red radiation; direct evidence for phytochrome control. A further requirement for germination is an alternating temperature. The results suggest a multiple form of dormancy. The initial form does not allow a response to light and is overcome by imbibition at a high temperature. The residual dormancy is controlled by phytochrome. |
