Abstract/Contents: | Shifting clay and sand produced imbalance between the human and animal population and between the plant, water and land resources in Iraq. Drought, over-exploitation of natural vegetation and improper cultural operations accelerated sand drift. A technique for sand dune reclamation is described. The following species are recommended for testing on temporarily stabilized dunes with and without supplementary irrigation: Calligonum commosum, C. caput medusae, C. arboresceas, C. eriopodum, Haloxylon ammodendron, H. salicornicum, H. persicum, H. aphyllum, Tamarix articulata (= T. aphylla), Halocnemum strobilaceum (saline areas), Lasiurus sindicus, Panicum turgidum, Zizyphus nummularia, Ammodendron conollyi, A. karelini, Cenchrus setigerus, Agropyron cristatum, A. desertorum and Bouteloua curtipendula. |
