Abstract/Contents:"A special quality certificate for grass seed blends was established by the two Chambers of Agriculture of Lower Saxony. The control of the voluntary participating companies includes growing tests of perennial ryegrass blends for testing trueness and proportion of the varieties. High percentages of samples found not to comply with the declared composition show the necessity for the introduction of the quality certificate. Since the usual growing tests are very time consuming and costly, influenced by germination and stand establishment and can test only the trueness and proportions with respect to the maturity groups, parallel samples were tested by bulk seed storage protein electrophoresis which is a faster and less onerous and expensive technique. A comparison of the results showed a sufficiently good agreement in verification between the two methods to suggest that electrophoresis should seriously be considered."
