Describes characteristics of turf root systems of temperate zone grasses, including: root depth, influence of nitrogen supply, soil salinity effects, influence of soil moisture, and root density. Focuses on the effects of temperature on root growth, and mentions the reductive effects on root depth of high summer temperatures. Suggests not mowing more than one-third off of the height of the grass at any given time. Briefly discusses fall root regeneration. Contrasts annual and perennial root systems.
