Abstract/Contents:Controlling speedwell which is most commonly called by its scientific name Veronica is complicated by different growth habits and response to herbicides of the several species that have become serious turfgrass weeds. This report is on the postemergence applications of several herbicides on V. filiformis (perennial), V. serpyllifolia (perennial) and V. arvensis (winter annual). Endothal sprayed in the spring at 1 lb/A observed one month later or one year later controlled V. filiformis 70-95%, a repeat application 90-95% with no injury to turf. The control of V. arvensis was 50-90% with one to two treatments. There was no control of V. serpyllifolia. DCPA sprayed at 10-12 lb/A with one treatment controlled V. filiformis 70-95% in one month and 95-100% as observed one year later. There was no control of V. serpyllifolia and in plots where filiformis and serphyllifolia were both growing the V. serpyllifolia was replacing the V. filiformis. There was excellent control of V. arvensis by DCPA but some new seedlings came up the next season. There was serious injury to bentgrass. However this was gradually replaced by bluegrass producing a much more desirable turf. One application of bentazon sprayed at 1 lb/A gave 55-75% control of V. filiformis, 25% of V. serpyllifolia and 50% control of V. arvensis. Two or three treatments raised the control to 80-85%, 60% and 80-95% observed one month after treatment. One year later control was considerably less. There was no turf injury. A mixture of 2,4-D, silvex and dicamba thinned out V. filiformis 50-60% after one month but it recovered after one year. V. serpyllifolia and V. arvensis were controlled about 95% but there was plenty of regrowth one year later. The use of a wax bar impregnated with 2,4-D was more effective on V. filiformis.
