Abstract/Contents:The use of sports turf grounds involves a numerous amount of problems from both heavy use and site conditions which impede plant growth, such as shade in domed stadiums. These problems necessitate the search for new grass species which will continue to display good quality even under extreme conditions. The tufted hair-grass may be a species which satisfies these requirements. When tested by the Federal Plant Registration Office in Germany and in England it showed very good results, especially in regards to sward density. Initial tests under shaded conditions also strongly imply that breeding species of tufted hair-grass are more shade tolerant than perennial ryegrass or smooth-stalked meadow grass. An inclusion of this species in the RSM is worth considering on the basis of these results.
