Abstract/Contents:"The physical properties of sports turf rootzone mixes incorporating peat, organic soil and sandy loam soil amendments were evaluated in relation to twenty-eight different sand materials. The sand types varied with respect to particle size, uniformity of the grain size distribution and shape. The physical properties of the mixes varied considerably depending on the sand used, for example for the 75/25 sand/peat mixes, hydraulic conductivity ranged from 95-827 mm h⁻¹ and air-filled porosity (at -3 kPa matric potential) ranged from 0.9% to 24.6%. Drainage rates and the balance between air-filled and capillary pore space were influenced primarily by sand size, while bulk density, total porosity and shear strength were influenced mainly by the uniformity of the grain size distribution. Rootzone mixes tended to have less pore space when grains were more rounded and less spherical. However, unless extremes of grain shape occur, decisions on sand selection should be made solely on the basis of sand grain size distribution."
