Abstract/Contents:"Rabbit populations in Britain are increasing by about 2% a year and nationally numbers could double over the next 40 to 50 years from current levels due to the waning effects of myxomatosis. Consequently, the amount of damage being caused by grazing and burrowing on recreational grassland by rabbits is increasing. Lethal and non-lethal methods of management are available to reduce the damage. The cost-effectiveness of these methods is reviewed. Fumigation is considered to be the best lethal method and fencing the best non-lethal method. Research is currently underway to develop novel methods of management and these methods are discussed. An expert system is also being developed which should enable managers to produce management plans tailor-made for their own circumstances with the aim of reducing damage to economically acceptable levels. This represents a more balanced approach rather than attempting eradication. Wildlife on recreational grassland may be of ecological importance and may make the facility more marketable to existing and potential users and these factors must be taken into consideration when developing any management plan."
