| Abstract/Contents: | Mefluidide was applied on two occasions in 1976 to tall fescue growing between the rows of a trellised apple orchard. The effects of the mefluidide on color, height, and weight of the tall fescue were measured periodically throughout the season. All rates, 0.14, 0.28, and 0.56 kg/ha reduced color ratings, but did not decrease stand density. By the last color rating date (September 24), all treated turf had higher color ratings than the control. On the second application date (approximately four weeks later), the 0.14 kg/ha treatment received 0.56 kg/ha, the 0.28 kg/ha received 0.28 kg/ha, and the 0.56 kg/ha received 0.14 kg/ha. All treated grass had significantly lower height than the control on all measurement dates except the last (September 24). Routine mowing management in the orchard was once per week. In the section treated with mefluidide there were only two mowings during the 11 week experiment, which would indicate a savings of nine mowings. Clipping weights that were taken during the mowing indicated that, on both occasions, all treated turf produced significantly less vegetation than the control. There were however, no differences in the weights across the mefluidide treatments. |
