| Abstract/Contents: | Plants of Sasa nipponica and Zoysia japonica with their surrounding soil were transplanted to cylindrical iron pots and subjected to pressures of 0, 2.5, 3.75 and 5.0 kg/cm2 (Z. japonica) and 0 or 2.5 kg/cm2 (S. nipponica). Depression of photosynthesis was max. at 4 days after compression and was greater in S. nipponica than in Z. japonica. 3 wk after compression, the photosynthetic rate had recovered to 70 and 100% of the control in Z. japonica compressed at 5 and 2.5 kg/cm2, resp., but was (50% of that of the control in S. nipponica. The decrease in DM production after compression was due to reduction of assimilating area/pot rather than to a decrease in photosynthetic ability or an increase in respiration rate/unit leaf area. Leaf area and dry wt. of above-ground organs decreased as the applied pressure increased. Dry wt. of underground organs of Z. japonica was not affected by compression. |
