Abstract/Contents:In Petri-dish experiments, 5 samples of Z. japonica seeds were tested for germination at 35 deg or 25 deg C in the light or dark, with or without chilling moist seed at 3 deg for 30-300 days and with or without soaking in 0.5% NaOH solution for 12 h or treatment after such soaking with 50 ppm GA3 + 0.1% KNO3 for 12 h. At 35 deg in the light, germination of all chemically-treated and in the dark of all chilled and chemically-treated seed was high and was intermediate in unchilled seed treated with GA3 + KNO3. At 25 deg germination was absent or low in unchilled seed, intermediate in chilled seed treated with NaOH alone and high in chilled seed treated with GA3 + KNO3 irrespective of light conditions. Germination was absent or low in untreated seed irrespective of temperature or light conditions. Increasing the length of the chilling period increased germination in untreated seed, but germination percentage tended to fall in seed treated with NaOH when chilling was extended beyond 60-80 days. Differences in response between seed samples were small except in unchilled seed treated with GA3 + KNO3 and in chilled seed treated with NaOH alone.
