Abstract/Contents:The growth characteristics of mascarenegrass (Zoysia tenuifolia) are discussed. Shoot growth is very slow and the root system is more shallow and fibrous than that of other Zoysia spp. In a trial, 4 propagation methods (using stolons, plugs, sprigs or sods) in early May and various planting densities were investigated. Propagation by 4-inch-diameter turf plugs planted 6 inches apart (centre to centre) produced the highest percentage cover when assessed 4 months and 12 months after planting. Stolons remained dormant for about 2 months after planting but grew vigorously thereafter.
