Abstract/Contents:The growth of the C4 species Axonopus compressus and Setaria plicata and the C3 species Oplismenus compositus was studied in field experiment in Java and in growth chamber trials in the Netherlands. There was no marked difference in RGR between C3 and C4 species at high light intensities with either high or low water supply. Net photosynthesis was highest in C4 species under all conditions, but with decreasing light intensity O. compositus showed the highest leaf NAR through formation of a larger leaf area. At very low light intensities A. compressus had a lower RGR than O. compositus, a factor which may be responsible for its absence from areas of deep shade. Since RGR values do not prevent the C3 species from competing at high light intensities it is suggested that factors such as the high root:shoot ratio, a high soluble sugar content and a high initial growth rate may give C4 grasses an advantage over C3 grasses in open, dry areas. Some of these factors could be indirectly the result of the presence of the C4 pathway of photosynthesis.
