Abstract/Contents:Presents research examining types of mulch to use when seeding a new lawn. Marsh hay, straw, Penn Mulch and Culex were evaluated. "These four mulched areas were divided in half to receive either a starter fertilizer or a 10-10-10 fertilizer application to see if starter fertilizer increases germination and establishment better than a 10-10-10." Results indicate that "the Culex plot had germination fastest and densest, but the turf in the straw, marsh hay and unmulched areas seemed to mature quicker" and that two weeks after seeding "all areas were acceptable...no differences were observed between the two fertilizer applications on any of the areas." Also discusses the best time for seeding, stating that "from about August 15 to September 15 is the very best time of year to establish a new lawn."
