Abstract/Contents:"Pensacola bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge) stolon-root systems immobilize appreciable amounts of fertilizer N applied on Leon fine sand. Nitrogen immobilization apparently increases as functions of time and N rate until full development of the stolon-root system is achieved. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the time required for development under different levels of N fertilization and the distribution of N. With this in mid a field experiment was conducted with Pensacola bahiagrass on virgin Leon fine sand. Nitrogen was applied at 0, 100, 200, and 300 kg/ha/year in two equal applications. Oven-dry stolon-root yields were related to age of the plant and N rate. Stonon-root mass increased as N rates were increased due primarily to the development of stonons. Nitrogen immobilized by the roots were relatively uniform with variable N rates and small in contrast to that immobilized by the stolons. Stolon-root mass and N uptake were much less than previously reported for mature Pensacola bahiagrass stolon-root systems receiving similar treatments. Approximately 40% of applied N was recovered in the top part of the plant. The stolon-root system accounted for some 7% of applied N when 100 and 200 kg/ha were added, but 23% at 300 kg/ha rate."
